In astrology, the Second House is responsible for several key areas of life. First and foremost, it's about material resources – your income, property, and ability to earn. It's also connected to your value system – what is truly important and valuable to you. Another area is self-esteem and talents, meaning innate abilities that can bring income. Finally, the Second House shows your relationship with your body – nutrition, comfort, and physical pleasures.
The cusp (beginning) of the 2nd House and the planets within it shape your financial strategy.

What the Sources Say About the Second House
The second house is described as the house of money, and that is where most articles stop. The reference works in our library read it as the house of what a person owns, earns and values — and, crucially, always against the eighth.
Acquisition versus sharing. Vronsky's material makes the pairing explicit: the second house is traditionally connected with possession and acquisition, and its analysis shows how a person will provide for themselves and earn, and how they relate to the things they own. The eighth house describes what is shared, inherited and owed. A person's material life cannot be read from either alone — what they accumulate is only half the picture next to what they owe and share.
Saturn in Taurus in the second: the classical caution. Lilly's and Vronsky's material in the library both treat a Saturn placed here as a specific statement about the relationship to property — one that the older authors read as restriction and delay rather than as poverty. The distinction matters: an afflicted second house is read as a slow relationship with resources, not as an absence of them.
What a strong planet in someone else's second house does. The synastry material offers an observation that is easy to verify in practice: a synastry Jupiter in your second house makes you think of the other person as comfortably off — especially if their Jupiter is harmonious — or at least as strongly oriented toward success. It is a useful reminder that the house describes what you project onto the other person as much as what they are.
Mercury's placement here is conditional. One note in the material is unusually careful about strength: this position of Mercury is not very significant on its own and has force only with very strong favourable configurations. When those are present, it gives its subjects an opportunity they would not otherwise have. That conditional framing is worth keeping — many popular texts present every placement as equally consequential, and the traditional authors did not.
What the second house does in your chart depends on its sign, the condition of its ruler, the planets inside it and its aspects — and on the eighth house it is read against. That is what you read from your own natal chart.
