How to choose a club and sport for a child according to their natal chart (Mars and Mercury)

"We enrolled our son in karate, and he cries there. My daughter quit music after a month." Sound familiar? Parents often choose activities that fulfill their own unfulfilled dreams, rather than nurturing the child's talents.

Astrology provides a precise answer to where your child will be happy and successful. To do this, you need to look at two planets in their chart:

  1. Mars (♂): Responsible for Sport and physical activity. How does the child expend energy? Do they need a team or solitude? Combat or dance?
  2. Mercury (☿): Responsible for Intellect and hobbies. How do they learn? Do they need chess, LEGO, or a drama club?

🔥 Mars in Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius)

Energy: Explosive, leadership-oriented, competitive.

These children cannot stay at home. They need an adrenaline rush. Sports should involve elements of competition ("Who is faster/stronger?").

  • Mars in Aries: Sprinter. Needs quick results. Boxing, karate, hockey, fencing, go-karting. Team games – only if they are the captain.
  • Mars in Leo: Performer. Sports should be beautiful and spectacular. Rhythmic gymnastics, dance, figure skating, tennis. Applause and beautiful costumes are important to them.
  • Mars in Sagittarius: Strategist. Needs prestigious or "smart" sports. Equestrianism, archery, tennis, tourism, golf.

🌍 Mars in Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn)

Energy: Enduring, persistent, slow.

Sprints and aggression are not for them. They wear opponents down. Technique and tangible results (a trophy, muscles) are important to them.

  • Mars in Taurus: Strongman. Lazy to run, but very enduring. Weightlifting, wrestling (Greco-Roman), judo. For girls – dance (fluidity), sculpting, gardening.
  • Mars in Virgo: Technician. Loves complex coordination-based activities. Yoga, Pilates, billiards, cycling, rollerblading. Precision of movement is important to them.
  • Mars in Capricorn: Marathoner. The most enduring sign. Mountaineering, rock climbing, long-distance running, skiing. They are willing to train for years for an Olympic medal.

💨 Mars in Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius)

  • Mars in Gemini: Agile. Athletics, soccer, volleyball, basketball, table tennis, tennis, cycling. They need a change of scenery and movements.
  • Mars in Libra: Aesthete. Doesn't like to sweat or fight. Ballroom dancing, pair figure skating, fencing (non-contact), yoga, aikido (using an opponent's force).
  • Mars in Aquarius: Extremist. Team sports, skydiving, snowboarding, skateboarding, esports. They need everything unusual and modern.

🌊 Mars in Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces)

Energy: Emotional, hidden, flowing.

Psychological comfort is important to them. They don't like fierce competition (except Scorpio).

  • Mars in Cancer: Protector. Loves water. Swimming, synchronized swimming, sailing. At home – wrestling (protecting the family). They need gentle support from the coach; yelling will break them.
  • Mars in Scorpio: Fighter. The most energetically powerful sign. They need overload. Boxing, no-holds-barred fighting, triathlon, extreme sports, survival. They revel in overcoming pain.
  • Mars in Pisces: Dancer. Yoga, Qigong, Wushu, Aikido, dance, swimming. Music and fluidity are important to them.

🎨 Mercury: Hobbies for Mind and Hands

If Mars is the body, then Mercury is the brain and fine motor skills.

  1. Mercury in Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius):

    • Drama club, debates, KVN (comedy show), blogging, public speaking.
    • They need to perform and be in the spotlight.
  2. Mercury in Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn):

    • LEGO, construction sets, clay modeling, sewing, cooking, economics club, chess, botany.
    • They need to create something tangible and useful.
  3. Mercury in Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius):

    • Foreign languages, journalism, programming (IT), robotics, speed reading, comic book drawing.
    • They need information and communication.
  4. Mercury in Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces):

    • Music school, painting (watercolor), psychology, history, photography, chemistry (experiments).
    • They need to express feelings and mysteries.

FAQ

What if the child likes something that "doesn't suit" them?

Let them pursue it! The horoscope is a hint about where they have natural talent and where it will be easier for them. But a person can develop against the stars, gaining new experience.

What to do if Mars is "weak" (in Libra or Cancer)?

Don't force them to be a champion. For such children, sport is about health and enjoyment, not medals. Dance or swimming would be better suited for them than boxing.

My child doesn't want to do anything. Is this normal?

Perhaps they are overloaded at school (weak Mercury) or have an energy deficit (weak Sun). Give them time to rest ("doing nothing" is also beneficial) and suggest trying something unconventional, such as blogging or esports.

What the Sources Say About Children in the Chart

The specialist literature in our library approaches this question differently from the popular articles. Goodman, Vronsky and the Kabbalistic volumes are less interested in a headcount than in what the chart says about the kind of parent-child relationship involved — and the material is specific enough to be useful.

The fifth house describes a relationship, not a number. Vronsky's volumes read the fifth house and its ruler as indicating the character of the relationship with children, and the classical authors attached far more weight to the ruler's condition than to the sign alone. An afflicted fifth-house ruler in his material points to difficulty of some kind — the classical text lists loss of a first child among the harder indications, alongside divorce, and this is important to state carefully: the tradition read these as tendencies within a whole chart, never as predictions about a specific person's life.

Goodman on what to actually look for in a child. Her material is practical rather than fatalistic, and this is where it earns its place. She reads a child's chart to find where their real aptitudes lie and advises parents to test them concretely — with a Taurus child, for instance, she suggests checking artistic ability, noting that whether he becomes a professional painter or not, learning to understand painting and to draw reasonably well will serve him regardless. With Leo children she observes that they become ringleaders early and like to direct others, which earns them the dislike of more diffident children's mothers, and adds the specific parental task: teach them to be more attentive and considerate of the other children.

Where astrology gives parents an actual warning. Vronsky's advice about an Aquarius child is the clearest example in the library of a chart-based caution that a parent can act on: parents should pay attention to their Aquarius child's friends, because he is too simple-hearted and loves everything new, and may naively get drawn into an unpleasant situation. Alone he is quiet, modest and shy — but as soon as he is in a group of friends he becomes a ringleader and often shocks those around him.

The Kabbalistic material on how a child receives encouragement. One observation from those volumes is worth passing on because it is so concrete: if a young Taurean Mars is taught to peel potatoes, he will very likely help willingly — on the condition that the completion of his work is marked causally and not merely mentally, or not at all. Saying "thank you, dear" as a formality does not count; saying it with feeling does.

What this adds up to. Read together, the sources treat the children question as a question about relationship quality and about the child's own nature — not as a forecast of how many. The number, where the tradition addresses it at all, is read from fertility signatures and the ruler of the relevant house, and even there the authors insist on synthesising several factors before saying anything.

Which houses and rulers apply in your case depends on the whole chart — your own natal chart is where the fifth house, its ruler and its condition can actually be read together.
